Abel Tasman SUP

Located at beautiful Marahau, on the doorstep of the Abel Tasman National Park, we offer a whole range of paddleboard hire, and lessons to give you the opportunity to experience this incredible corner of the world in a totally memorable way. With a full team of experienced, qualified and safety-conscious staff, we’re the perfect people to introduce you to New Zealand’s latest water sport craze. As far as fun, unique and serene activities go, you won’t find many that tick all of those boxes. Early morning is the best time to go SUPing and we have sit on kayaks available too ideal for a paddle around for an hour or two.

We are Based at Old Macdonalds Farm Holiday Park and most often you will find us down the beach the Sand Spit is where we hang out just 100M south of the boat ramp we conduct SUP lessons from 9am and throughout the day; even at low tide we have a small tractor that gets the gear down the beach, the water front is just 10 Minutes walk from Old Macdonalds Farm

If you are going paddleboarding imagine you might be going swimming so take nothing with you. We Provide you with a Paddleboard, Leash, PFD and a Paddle

You need suitable clothes, shirts and shorts, you don’t mind getting wet, put sunscreen on. When it’s cold we do have some wet suits available. You may want to bring a towel and a change of clothes and your camera, you are welcome to leave us with your bag for safe keeping and if you like to leave us with your camera we can get some great photos of you.

We consider your safety at the highest concern as often the wind can pickup and make paddleboarding very difficult. If you are a confident paddle boarder and have come to see Split Apple Rock then we suggest you check the weather forecast and be prepared to meet with us before 9am. For a strong paddle boarder to get to Split Apple Rock and return takes 2 Hrs, almost everyday the sea breeze (from the north) will pick up at 10:30am and become very strong at 11:30am (by 1:30pm the kite surfers are getting ready to go out and it is too windy for sup). If you haven’t done paddle boarding before and depending on your ability it can take up to 1 hour to learn. If you have booked a two hour freedom hire and you require a lesson and you need a 1 hr lesson then you will only get 1 hr after the lesson concludes. If you have never done paddle boarding before and you are not a strong paddler then Split Apple Rock might be too dangerous for you to visit. If by chance you get to Split Apple Rock and the northerly picks up very strong, then you need to carry the sup up the 20 min walking track to the road and place it on the side of the track while you walk 1 hr 19 min back along the road. If a Southerly of more than 10knts is forecast we may cancel paddleboarding for the day because the wind is blowing offshore it is very easy to paddle out to sea but very hard to get back. If you are experienced paddlers then you need to prove that to us, and at any stage we can swap you into one of our double sit on top kayaks, they can handle a lot more wind than a sup. We also have a policy for under 16 YO’s must be accompanied by an adult and are restricted to within the estuary or if the tide is out, within a 50M area defined by the instructor.
